Welfare and Whereabouts
The Embassy will do all it can to locate and/or confirm the welfare of a relative visiting or living in Tanzania. Once a welfare or whereabouts request is received, Embassy officials work to make contact with the individual. Due to the Federal Privacy Act*, the Embassy will ask the individual in question to contact the concerned relative in the U.S.
*Under the provisions of the Federal Privacy Act, consular officers may not reveal information regarding an individual Americans location, welfare, intentions, or problems to anyone, including family members and Congressional representatives, without the expressed consent of that individual. Although sympathetic to the distress this can cause concerned families, consular officers must comply with the provisions of the Privacy Act.
