The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam is seeking an individual for the position of Radio and Telephone Technician, in the Information Program Center (IPC) Section.

BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
Responsible for the maintenance and installation of Mission radio equipment, including hand-held radios, base stations, vehicular radios, and all associated equipment, such as antennas, cabling, batteries, and chargers.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
80% - Programs hand-held, mobile, and base-station VHF/UHF radios and provides end-user training to American staff and their families and Locally-engaged staff.
Troubleshoots hardware, software, and reception/ transmission problems with all radio equipment.
Develops radio training materials and conducts formal training classes for American staff, their families and local staff. Conducts one-on-one training as needed.
Installs mobile radios in vehicles and radio base stations in offices and residences, including the associated antennas and coaxial cabling and wiring. Maintains the radio equipment at the Zanzibar Office.
Maintains batteries, chargers, and test and maintenance equipment, comprising several hundred individual items and the substantial documentation regarding equipment and frequencies.
Coordinates with the Radio/Telephone Assistant to maintain an appropriate stock of spare and replacement radios, parts, and accessories and to maintain an up-to-date inventory. Plans for replacement and repair of defective equipment taking into account ordering and shipping times.
20% - Acts as primary backup to the Radio/Telephone technician. In that capacity performs minor telephone line installations and troubleshooting and assists with residential make-readies.

Education: Secondary School Education (Ordinary level) is required. Minimum FTC in telecommunications is required.
Prior experience: 2 years of experience in installation/repair/ maintenance of radios.
Language proficiency: Level IV (fluent) English and Swahili (speaking, writing and reading) is required.
Knowledge: Needs to understand local radio and telephone rules, laws, and regulations.
Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently. Ability to troubleshoot and research solutions to problems. Must be familiar with the Microsoft computer operating system in use in the radio section (currently XP) and the suite of Microsoft office applications. Must learn to use specialized software to program radios. Software varies depending on radio model.
