Tanzanian Journalist Joins Infectious Disease Study Tour in U.S.
January 17, 2007
A Senior Health and Development Affairs Reporter with The Guardian Limited, Adolph Simon Kivamwo leaves shortly to participate in a three-week study tour in the United States on Infectious Diseases and HIV/AIDS. Part of the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme run by the U.S. State Department, the tour will provide participants with a focused learning opportunity while also facilitating personal and professional contacts between the people of the United States and Tanzania.
The programme is aimed at examining the global impact of infectious diseases and the HIV/AIDS pandemic on community development, economic growth and development, public health policy, social cohesion, and national and regional stability. Participants will have a chance to review U.S. policies on HIV/AIDS and learn about U.S. commitment to assist other countries to combat infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and avian influenza.
While in the U.S., Kivamwo and 22 other participants from various countries around the world will visit Washington, D.C., California, Colorado, Georgia and Florida. Meetings in Washington will be organized with various government officials, including the U.S. Department of State for an overview of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
In California they plan to visit the University of San Diego’s Division of Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Research and Adult HIV/AIDS Clinical Trial Unit. In Colorado they plan to meet with officials from the Mayor’s office of HIV Resources, responsible for managing and disbursing funds to community organizations. Planned visits in Georgia and Florida include an Infectious Disease Clinic and the American Red Cross.
“I believe the programme will enlighten me and give me a deeper understanding of the whole issue of health,” said Kivamwo, adding: “Upon returning back home, I promise to share the skills gained with the entire people of Tanzania through my writings and discussions.”
