February 2, 2007
Two Tanzanians are leaving for the United States for training programmes that run from February 3 through February 24, 2007. The programmes are “Transparency and Good Governance,” and “Civil Rights and Community Leadership.”
A press release from the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam said that Mussa Kombo Bakari, Programme Officer of Zanzibar’s Law Society will be attending the “Transparency and Good Governance” programme, whose goals are to introduce participants to the principles of transparency in government and to highlight the tools used to combat corruption in the public and private sectors by emphasising separation of powers, checks and balances, and public access to information.
Furthermore, the programme will address the role of private citizens, the media and civic education play in fostering more ethical, accountable and responsive government; and enhance the understanding of ethical systems and accountability in government and business.
Josephine Simon, Community Conservation Officer (Gender Issues) for the African Wildlife Foundation, is to attend a programme entitled “Civil Rights and Community Leadership” that is a three-week Africa Regional Project designed to explore the historical and modern challenges of civil rights and the quest for equality among minority populations.
The programme will also examine legal, political, economic and humanitarian concerns that encompass civil rights; and explore the role of various governmental and non-governmental organisations working to improve the lives of minority populations nationally and locally. In addition, it will explore the diversity of views held by Americans, and how this diversity contributes to a dynamic and resilient political system.
Both projects are part of the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme run by the U.S. State Department on behalf of the American people, and intend to facilitate personal and professional contacts between the people of the United States and Tanzania.
