U.S. Ambassador Michael L. Retzer launches WAPO Radio Programs

U.S. Ambassador Michael L. Retzer inaugurated today February 20, 2007, two projects in Dar es Salaam that received funding from the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund (ASSHF) and the Embassy’s Democracy and Human Rights Fund (DHRF) amounting to Tshs.32, 582,375.
The projects are Shalom Primary School which received Tshs.9, 386,000 from the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund for construction of two classrooms, two offices and toilets. The ASSHF promotes self-reliance through community action, striving to support projects that impact entire communities, through direct or indirect benefits.
The other project received Tshs. 23,196,375 through the DHRF for the World and Peace Organization (WAPO) radio station’s educational programs on human rights issues and democratization.
Inaugurating the radio programs Ambassador Retzer said the Embassy is extremely pleased to be able to make this important contribution to the Word and Peace Organization (WAPO). “It is more important, I think, for us to recognize the shared commitment between people like yourselves and the U.S. Embassy to the goal of improving human rights issues and democracy in Tanzania. This commitment, which we all value so dearly, must be shared by all -- from government and business leaders down to each individual -- in order to strengthen Tanzania’s quality of education or human rights issues and democracy, and secure its progress as a nation,” Ambassador Retzer said.
The goal of the Embassy’s DHRF is to support human rights and democracy. The DHRF is intended to support activities that promote political pluralism and human and civil rights, rather than longer-term development-oriented activities. DHRF provides a mechanism to support and strengthen democratic institutions and civil society, as well as the adoption and adherence to democratic values and practices in African countries.
