The

Ms. Hilda Gondwe will be joined by officials from the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric
AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) to inaugurate renovated clinic space at the
Kibong’oto National Tuberculosis Hospital in Siha District, Kilimanjaro
Region.
The renovation, carried out by EGPAF with funds from
the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), resulted
in improved pharmacy, laboratory, and clinic space. The renovation took
16 weeks at a cost of US$254,587 (Tshs.317 million).
The improvements which also include donation of equipment such as
computers, printers, weighing scales and stationery will allow
comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment service provision for people
living with HIV/AIDS in Kilimanjaro region. “These critical
improvements will result in better working conditions for the staff of
the hospital and better care for its patients” said Dr. Stefan Wiktor,
CDC Country Director.
KNTBH is a referral hospital providing
health care to TB patients with the capacity of 300 beds and an average
of 1000 admissions per year. Approximately 40% of the tuberculosis
patients attending Kibongoto are also infected with HIV.
Since
July 2005, EGPAF has been assisting Kibong’oto Hospital staff to
provide HIV care and treatment services, through funding from CDC
through PEPFAR. “To date, 613 PLWHA have received services at this
clinic and 17 health care workers had been trained”. Says Dr. Anja
Giphart, EGPAF Country Director.
