The American People provide support for three new HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Centers across Tanzania
May 15, 2008
May 14th and 15th marked the opening of three new HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Centers across Tanzania. These Centers, located in the Monduli (Arusha), Kigoma and Kasulu, are part of the large number of Care and Treatment Centers that will be opening throughout the country in the next several months. As fully integreated clinics within the Tanzanian health system, they have been established in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and with support from the American people through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
The Care and Treatment Clinics will now help to serve the 1.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. The importance of these clinics was highlighted at their respective inaugurations, with the Kigoma Regional Commissioner, Hon. Ret. Col. Joseph Simbaklia, saying “I call on every person in Kigoma to come to the facility to test for HIV and know their status, and to use these facilities for AIDS treatment. And I call upon the leadership of the hospital and the staff to ensure all those who need services receive them.”
Support for the clinics in Kigoma province is provided in collaboration with the Columbia University International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment (ICAP Tanzania) and in Arusha, through the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. This support is part of on-going U.S. Government support to Tanzania. By the end of this fiscal year, America will have provided over $818 million to Tanzania towards combating HIV/AIDS. This assistance comes from the American people and is part of overall U.S. Government direct and multilateral assistance to Tanzania of more than 725billion Tanzanian shillings.
