Tanzanians Honored with Special Achievement Award
June 3rd, 2008
The United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) awarded Dr. Eunice Mmari and Dr. Patrick Swai, both of Tanzania, and working at the U.S. Embassy, Dar es Salaam, with Special Achievement Awards at the Annual PEPFAR Awards Dinner on Sunday evening, June 1st, in Kampala, Uganda. Both Dr. Mmari and Dr. Swai are widely recognized throughout the U.S. Mission to Tanzania and the broader Tanzanian HIV/AIDS community for their expertise and leadership. Dr. Mmari and Dr. Swai are constantly relied upon to translate theory into practice within the Tanzanian context. Although long recognized in Tanzania for their significant contributions, the conferral of these awards marked an opportunity for the global PEPFAR team to recognize and thank Dr. Mmari and Dr. Swai for their on-going contribution.
Support for the PEPFAR program in Tanzania is part of on-going U.S. Government support to Tanzania. By the end of this fiscal year, America will have provided over $818 million to Tanzania towards combating HIV/AIDS. This assistance comes from the American people and is part of overall U.S. Government direct and multilateral assistance to Tanzania of more than 725 billion Tanzanian shillings.
