U.S. Mission applauds Tanzania for a balanced budget

  • Appreciates increased funding to the education sector
  • June 13, 2008

The U.S. Mission applauds President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and the Ministry of Finance for proposing a budget that takes into consideration the diverse needs of the Tanzanian people. We know that in these tight fiscal times, a balanced budget and sound economic policy are critical for any government to provide services to all its citizens. Through sound monetary policies and strong partnerships, we firmly believe in a bright future for all Tanzanians.

The U.S. Embassy spokesperson said, “We appreciate that the budget announced yesterday is less dependent on foreign assistance, and that there is an increased focus on funding to the education sector. Helping to improve the quality of education in Tanzania is also one of our key priorities.”

In addition to Millennium Challenge Compact of $698 million USD over the next five years mentioned during the budget speech, the American people are supporting Tanzania through direct and multilateral assistance of more than 750 billion Tanzanian shillings this fiscal year.

We look forward to seeing the details of the budget in the weeks ahead.
