Press Release
Americans & Tanzanians Continue to Fight AIDS
June 22, 2009
A delegation from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) led by COL. Nelson Michael, Director of the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP), met with the President of Tanzania, H.E Jakaya Kikwete, on June 18, 2009. The delegation was in the country last week to discuss ongoing collaborative public health and medical research activities including HIV/AIDS, pandemic influenza and malaria surveillance and diagnostics. The American delegation's visit to Tanzania was a follow-up to President Kiwkete's visit to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C., last month, which also included a visit to the White House for a meeting with President Barack Obama and a separate meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
While in Tanzania, the delegation visited projects funded by the American people through the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI). Currently, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research supports civilian HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services in Mbeya, Rukwa and Ruvuma, and all Tanzania People's Defense Forces (TPDF) facilities throughout Tanzania. Since 1999, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research has also been conducting scientific research studies in Mbeya to develop a globally effective preventive HIV-1 vaccine.
This visit is the latest step highlighting the ever strengthening partnership between the American and Tanzanian peoples and their governments to continue progress toward achieving a sustainable, independent health system that addresses this nation's public health challenges.
The United States of America is a global leader in combating HIV/AIDS worldwide. PEPFAR, a 10-year, $48 billion program, is the largest initiative in history to combat a single disease. By October, the American people will have provided nearly $950 million to combat HIV/AIDS throughout Tanzania. The United States will continue to work steadfast with the entire Tanzanian nation to fulfill President Kikwete’s vision of a “Tanzania without AIDS." We believe it is possible. TANZANIA BILA UKIMWI INAWEZEKANA.
