U.S. Defence Department grants Tshs.109million for the construction of two water projects on Unguja and Pemba Islands

The U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) has granted an amount of US$ 89,000 (Tshs.109 million) for the construction of two water supply projects on Zanzibar, one on Unguja Island and the other on Pemba Island. The signing of these two agreements took place in Stone Town on Zanzibar on Friday, July 14, 2006.
The grant agreement on Unguja at Umbuji, Uzini constituency, Central District, worth US$44,000, (Tshs.53.9million) was signed by the U.S. Embassy’s Defence Attaché Lt. Col. Laura Varhola, and the Contractor for the construction, Mr. Masoud K. Masoud, from Millennium Engineering and Construction Consultants Inc., Ltd.
The grant agreement for Pemba South Region at Mjimbini, Mtambile constituency, Mkoani District, worth US$45,000, (Tshs.55.1million) was signed by the U.S. Embassy’s Defence Attaché Lt. Col. Laura Varhola, and the Contractor for the construction, Mr. Hemed N. Al Hilal of Al Hilal General Trading Company, Ltd. The Hon. Mansoor Yusufu Himid, Minister of Water, Construction, Energy and Lands on Zanzibar, as well as the Director of Water, Mr. Hemed Salim, were also present at the ceremony.
A U.S. Embassy press statement says that the water supply project at Unguja will provide clean and safe water for the 4,000 people of Umbuji and Pagali villages. The water supply project on Pemba will provide clean and safe water for the 3,545 people from the four villages of Mjimbini, Tasini, Tondooni, Mtakakaa and Tanga.
Both contracts provide for supplies necessary for the construction of these two projects. The Government of Zanzibar will provide all labour and technical expertise.
