American Art Delegation to Conduct Arts Workshops with Tanzanian Counterparts

July 27, 2009

The Great Lakes Consortium (GLC) of Toledo, Ohio is conducting arts workshops in Arusha and Zanzibar and leadership training in Tanga. The GLC events involve seven American artists from Ohio and more than 40 emerging Tanzanian female artists. The visit runs from July 6-30, 2009. The Ohio artists are in the country conducting workshops, roundtable discussions, and meetings with artists and art organizations. The delegation is also providing leadership training on how to create a Tanzanian Women Artists Network.

In these workshops the American artists are working on joint projects with their Tanzania counterparts. A beautiful quilt that was designed and created jointly by American and Tanzanian artists in Northwest Ohio, Ohio is being presented in these workshops to inspire more joint artwork in both countries.

This American delegation is the second such visit to Tanzania. The first delegation visited in February 2009. The first Tanzanian exchange delegation with 11 female artists travelled to Ohio in April 2009, where they completed a 28-day fellowship program.

Citizen Exchanges are carried out through a variety of professional, youth, cultural, and sports exchanges programs to further American foreign policy, to provide foreign participants with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and understanding so they can better address the challenges facing their countries, and to offer Americans the opportunity to share their expertise and experience with their foreign counterparts.
