Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and U.S. to conduct multi-lateral exercise
August 3, 2006
CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti – For the first time since 2000, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States will participate in Exercise Natural Fire, a 10-day multi-lateral field training exercise involving military personnel from East African Community nations, U.S.-based units and the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa.
This year’s exercise will start Aug. 8 and will focus on crisis response, military-to-military training and humanitarian events that include medical, veterinary and engineering civic assistance projects.
“The objective of Natural Fire is to enhance crisis response effectiveness through increased interoperability between each of the EAC nations and the United States,” said Rear Admiral Richard Hunt, CJTF-HOA commander.
Approximately 1,000 military personnel from the four countries will participate in the exercise.
“Natural Fire exemplifies the commitment between EAC nations and the U.S. It serves to underpin our cooperative investment in the long-term stability of the region,” added Hunt. “In addition to the field training events, the humanitarian projects will provide critical medical supplies, engineering support and services in rural regions of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.”
The exercise will be commanded by Kenyan Army Brig. Gen. Leonard Ngondi, who will have a military staff comprised of Kenyan, Tanzanian, Ugandan and U.S. officers.
“Natural Fire is an excellent opportunity to build personal relationships, work together as a team and to help enhance the capacity of the EAC nations.” Said Hunt.
