Tanzania welcomes 25 new Peace Corps Volunteers

August 23, 2007

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission D. Purnell Delly on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 administered the oath of office to 25 Health Education and Environmental Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV). The swearing-in ceremony was held at Mati Ilonga Agricultural College, Kilosa. The volunteers will assist rural communities in the country in meeting development needs at the grassroots level.

According to a U.S. Embassy statement the PCVs will work at grassroots level, they will work with rural community members, teachers, students, youth groups and others. The PCVs will assist in general health education with special attention on prevention of HIV/AIDS. PCVs will also be working in education and environmental activities with a special focus on girls’ empowerment, ICT, teaching math and sciences, and youth development. Mr. Delly told the PCVs they are all true American ambassadors and they represent the best face of America. He added that through their hard work and service to the Tanzania rural communities, they are making the United States a very proud nation.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted after the PCVs completed their Pre-Service training which instills in them Tanzania culture norms. They achieve this by staying with Tanzanian host families, and learning Kiswahili.

Other guests at the PCVs swearing in ceremony included Morogoro Regional Commissioner Major General (rtd) Said Kalembo, and Peace Corps Acting Country Director in Tanzania Patrick Proden.
