US Embassy hands over Lengasti Water Project
September 21, 2006
The US Embassy handed over the Lengasti village water supply project on Thursday, September 21, 2006 during a dedication ceremony at the Lengasti village, Simanjiro district. US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Purnell Delly presided over the ceremony. Lengasti water project has received funding from the US government through the Department of Defence, Humanitarian Assistance Progamme.
According to US embassy statement, this is one of the embassy's biggest water projects in Tanzania. The project worth Tshs 313.5 million is providing water to over 6000 people and 16,000 of their livestock, using a system of pumps, pipes, and storage tanks that draw water from a 20 kilometre source.
Delly said the Legasti water project consists of a pump house that draws water from a natural underground spring with a booster pump station halfway down the 20 kilometre pipeline. There are two pump station attendants’ offices with six water points and two 90,000 liter storage tanks. “That’s a lot of water. There are also three long cattle troughs to make sure the cows also get enough water, too,” Delly said.
He said that before this project, women of Legasti spent over 10 hours each and every day drawing water from 24 kilometers away and it left very little time for other daily chores. “I would like to make special note of the females amongst you. I know that women, and girls regardless of age, are the principal water drawers and carriers. I take special pleasure in inaugurating this water system today noting that it will ease the burden of this especially hard working group. May you use it and maintain it well, with the best wishes from the American people and, in particular, from the U.S. Department of Defense,” Delly said.
This water system has been built in an area that is known for its problem of water. It is bound to improve agricultural production, alleviate poverty and improve health of the villagers. World Vision Tanzania was the implementing partners of this water project.
At this dedication ceremony, Tanzania government was represented by Manyara Regional Commissioner COL (ret.) Anatory Tarimo, Simanjiro District Commissioner Khalid Mandia. Others were World Vision, National Director Getachew W. Michael, World Vision Zonal Director Mashimba Ndaki and Lengasti Village Chairman Mzee Maningo Kutatoi.
