Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Programme hosts camp for scholarship recipients

September 28, 2007

On September 28th – 30th, the 196 scholarship recipients of the Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Programme (AGSP) from Unguja Island, Zanzibar, will attend an HIV/AIDS Education Awareness camp. Ambassador Mark Green’s wife, Sue Green, will be guest of honour at the event.

Hosted by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Zanzibar, the local implementing partner for AGSP, the camp will include educational workshops, group work activities, and student presentations on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, as well as other issues such as gender and drug abuse. Twenty-two AGSP mentors will also participate in the camp and will attend a mentoring and life skills training session offered by the Academy for Educational Development.

The Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Programme is a key component of President Bush’s African Education Initiative (AEI), which addresses the millions of school aged children in Africa who do not attend school. In addition to providing scholarships to girls, the Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Programme provides mentoring for girls which includes topics such as HIV/AIDS education. FAWE Zanzibar works with the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement the Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Programme, which supports 300 primary and secondary girls in Zanzibar. There are a total of 925 primary and secondary girls who receive scholarships in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

This programme from the American people is part of overall U.S. Government direct and multilateral assistance to Tanzania of more than half a billion U.S. Dollars in 2007 (over 625 billion Tanzanian shillings)
