Press Release
U.S. Mission Closed for Columbus Day
October 9, 2009
The American Embassy in Dar es Salaam will be closed on Monday, October 12, for the Columbus Day holiday. The Embassy will reopen on Tuesday, October 13, 2009.
Columbus Day, also referred to as “A Day of Discovery”, commemorates the voyage of Christopher Columbus from Spain in 1492 which launched an era of discovery and exploration that continues to this day. In commemoration of his voyage, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 1934 requesting that the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as "Columbus Day."
Traditional Columbus Day celebrations in the United States include a parade down New York's Fifth Avenue, as well as parades and pageantry in many other cities.
