College Fair 2006

November 8, 2006

The U.S. Embassy is inviting secondary School students from Form three and above and their parents to the 2006 College Fair to be held on Friday, November 10, 2006 at the U.S. Mission between 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

This year’s College Fair is being held during the Seventh Annual International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State to recognize the benefits brought on by exchanges between the United States and other countries. This year’s theme is “International Education: Engaging in Global Partnerships and Opportunities.” According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy, the College Fair aims at increasing public awareness of the educational opportunities available in the U.S. for Tanzanian students. The goal is to enhance the quality and number of Tanzanian students applying to U.S. institutions.

The U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling said, “It all starts with a quality education, and education is a shared value around the world and the foundation of our children’s future. More than ever, success in the world depends on what you know, not where you live. Technology has leveled the playing field and ‘flattened’ the world. It has showed the value of math, science and other subjects in high demand across the globe,” she said.

Participants to the College Fair will be briefed on student visa requirements to enter the United States and they will also meet and hear presentations on how to use a College Fair.

Other presentations include: characteristics of higher education, financing higher education for non-U.S. students and U.S. college application procedures. Participants will have a chance to find out first-hand what U.S. College and university life is like from college recruiters from the Council for International Schools (CIS), as well as alumni of the institutions themselves.

According to the Institute for International Education’s Annual Open Doors report for 2005, Tanzania ranks seventh in Africa in number of students in the U.S., after Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Cameroon
