U.S. Government Experts Train Tanzanian Police in Forensics
November 9, 2006
The U.S. government is providing technical training and expertise to the Tanzanian Police Force in preparation for the opening of the Chemistry Section of the Tanzania Police Force Forensic Laboratory. The Tanzanian government has renovated the entire second floor of the police headquarters into a functional 18,600 square foot facility that will house a modern forensic laboratory. It will become a full-service forensic lab once the toxicology, trace and biology sections are completed.
Noted American forensic scientist and textbook author, Terry Mills, is conducting a two week course in Tanzania to instruct police force chemists in Basic Forensic Chemistry. The course includes a review of basic chemistry and a focus on chemical knowledge needed in the forensic testing of evidence. The United States Department of Justice/International Criminal Investigative Training Program has been providing these types of training courses over the past four years to Tanzania.
Carla Noziglia, a senior forensic advisor with the U.S. Government, has coordinated training and the installation of equipment in the laboratory valued at $ 2.5 million or 3.2 billion Tanzanian shillings. The U.S. Government provides funding through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL)
