November 21, 2008
U.S. Ambassador Mark Green encouraged hundreds of students who attended the annual U.S. College Fair on Friday, November 21 to consider applying to schools in the United States for college and University. He said, “you should study hard to become the leaders of tomorrow in Tanzania to further help lift up this country in which you are blessed to be in.”
The United States Embassy’s Educational Advising Office held the sixth annual U.S. College Fair at the Embassy Compound at Msasani to provide free information to Tanzanians about colleges and universities in the United States. It is a priority of the American people to provide free and factual information on studying in the U.S. and to encourage Tanzanian students to consider pursuing higher education in American. The U.S. College Fair aimed to increase awareness among the Tanzanian public and thus enhance the quality and quantity of applicants to U.S. institutions from Tanzania.
Tanzania currently has over 1,100 students studying in American undergraduate and graduate programs. According to the U.S. Cultural Affairs Officer Karen Grissette, the U.S. College Fair gave those interested in studying at U.S. Colleges a chance to find out first-hand about U.S. College and university life from thirty alumni representing their U.S. institutions.
Students had the chance to ask questions about many aspects of college/university life in America, on topics like courses of study, extracurricular activities, and financial aid. The Chief of the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section, Robert Hannan, gave a presentation on student visa procedures.
The U.S. College Fair is held annually in November to celebrate International Education Week, which this year is November 17 – November 21.
Apart from the College Fair, the U.S. Embassy helps prospective students, from high school level to University level to find reliable, unbiased, information about studying in the U.S. throughout the year through the Educational Advising Center.
