U.S. Ambassador's Visit to Morogoro

November 28, 2007

U.S. Ambassador Mark Green made his first official visit to Morogoro on Wednesday, November 28th, 2007. While in Morogoro, Ambassador Green met with senior officials of the Tanzanian Government, including the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, the Regional and District Commissioners and the Mayor of Morogoro.

On Wednesday, November 28th, at 11:00 a.m., at Forest Hill Secondary School in Morogoro, the Ambassador joined the Honorable Margaret Sitta, Minister of Education and Vocation Training, at the U.S. Peace Corps swearing in ceremony. The Ambassador officially swore in 38 American Peace Corps volunteers and extended his appreciation to the Tanzanian families that support the Peace Corps program in the area.

On the afternoon of the 28th, beginning at 3:00 p.m., the Ambassador visited Mikese Village to unveil a public expenditure tracking notice board. This event took place in partnership with the Public Expenditure Tracking Committee and the PACT Tanzania. The unveiling is a part of a larger public expenditure tracking system program which began in October when Mikese Village established their Public Expenditure Tracking Committee.

On Thursday, November 29th, beginning at 9:30 a.m., Ambassador Green participated in the official inauguration of the Morogoro Regional Medical Hospital Care and Treatment facility. The new facility is supported by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in partnership originally with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and more recently, the Deloitte/Family Health International partnership called TUNAJALI.

The Care and Treatment facility will increase access to HIV/AIDS treatment throughout the region and will allow for better linkages with other services such as those to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, home-based care services, with clinical care for those with Tuberculosis, and with services in the community.

Support for this program is part of the ongoing U.S. Government collaboration in Tanzania. Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has contributed over $500 million in Tanzania towards combating the dreaded scourge of HIV/AIDS. This fiscal year, the United States Government expects to increase PEPFAR assistance by an additional $303 million.

The Peace Corps, PETS, PEPFAR and TUNAJALI are only a handful of the several programs the U.S. Government provides as direct assistance to Tanzania. During the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2007, the U.S. Government is expected to provide over $648 million (over 745 billion Tanzanian shillings) in direct assistance and through multilateral organizations to Tanzania.
