Donation of books to University of Dodoma

The 114 books in different topics are worth $ 8,000, a donation from Bryant University, Department of Anthropology and African Studies in the U.S.


Political Officer Attends Graduation Ceremony at the Sega Secondary School in Morogoro

On November 4, U.S. Embassy Political Officer Stephanie Hutchison attended the graduation and dedication ceremony at the Sega Secondary School in Morogoro. With a $17,000 grant from the U.S. Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund, the Sega Secondary School installed an irrigation system with a solar powered water pump (more)

Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury at Chambezi, Bagamoyo

U.S. Fulbrighter Discusses Democracy in Africa

U.S. Fulbright scholar Dr. Abdulahi Osman, professor of comparative politics and African politics at the University of Georgia, discussed democracy in Africa with students of Dar es salaam-based Center for Foreign Relations October 30. The Center, funded by Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, trains mainly diplomats and civil servants from Tanzania and also from other African countries. (more)


20 Tanzanians to visit America for U.S. – Tanzania Basketball Coaches’ Exchange

The U.S. Embassy has selected twenty Tanzanians from nine regions of Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar for a basketball coaches’ clinic in the United States. The coaches’ delegation is scheduled to depart for the Washington DC on Monday evening, September 28. U.S. – Tanzanian Women Artists Exchange

In this fourth phase of the “Arts Exchanges on International Issues with Tanzania” program, the American people are sending 13 Tanzanian women artists to the U.S. These women artists from Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Zanzibar, Tanga, Arusha, and Dodoma will participate in several art shows in the United States organized by a local arts consortium in Ohio. First National Training of Male Circumcision Providers for HIV Prevention

The First National Training of Male Circumcision Providers was held at the Primary Health Care Institute in Iringa Town. Since 2006, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has been studying the benefits of male circumcision and this training is a major step towards improved male circumcision services in Tanzania.(more)

Supporting Pearl Farmers in East Africa

Ten jewelry and half-pearl aquaculture entrepreneurs from Zanzibar and Mafia Island, Tanzania have recently returned from a six-week fellowship program to the U.S. which was conducted July 19 to August 29. The fellowship was designed to improve the participants’ entrepreneurship, jewelry-making, and aquaculture skills.(more)

On August 31, 2009 the Director of International Admissions from Harvard College, Ms. Robin Worth, gave a presentation to students at the U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam. Over 50 students from Kibasila Secondary School, St. Anthony High School, Loyola High School, Al-Muntazil Islamic Seminary, Jitegemee Secondary School, St. Hellen Secondary School, Dar es Salaam Independent School, and their guidance counselors learned about the university admission process for highly competitive United States colleges and universities. CDA André Goes on Air to Explain U.S. Policies

On Friday, September 4, 2009, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Larry André gave a live interview to 102.6 Choice FM radio station to clarify the travel alert that had earlier been issued by the U.S. Department of State in connection with potential violence in Zanzibar during this political season. Later in the morning, CDA André also addressed the audience of ITV television by giving an interview to ITV’s senior journalist Yvonne Msemembo. In both of his media appearances, CDA André urged Zanzibar’s political parties to ensure that the current political season be free of violence.


U.S. officials tour Dar Rapid Transport planned facilities

On Friday, August 28, three U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials toured Dar Rapid Transport (DART), an agency charged with establishing and operating the new Bus Rapid Transit system for Dar es Salaam. Ronald Boenau, Kay Nordstrom, and Michael Gordon from DOT’s Federal Transit Administration were briefed on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system design and operation.(more)


Journalists Receive Training in the United States

Nine Tanzanian Journalists from various media houses have returned from an intensive one-month training program in the United States with support from the American People through the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)(more)


Expert Biodiversity Team Assesses Malagarasi River ahead of Hydropower Generation Project

A “Dream Team” including some of the world’s leading environmental scientists and social impact experts is hard at work conducting a Biodiversity Assessment at Kigoma’s Igamba Falls on the Malagarasi river. Funded by the American people through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the Rapid Biodiversity Assessment (RBA) is part of an extensive effort to better understand the eco-system (more)

The Country Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, John Vertefeuille launched the new HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Center at Mt. Meru Regional Hospital that will cater for the residents of Arusha and neighboring Manyara Region.  (more)


Thirty two Peace Corps Volunteers sworn-in

Chargé d’Affaires Larry André on August 19, 2009 swore-in 32 Peace Corps Volunteers to their two years of service to Tanzania. The American volunteers who will work in the Health and Environment fields will be stationed in Kiteto, Lushoto, Singida Rural, Hanang, Muheza, Same, Ruangwa, Lindi, Chamwino, Kondoa, Mbeya Rural, Newala, Masasi, Songea Rural and Njombe districts.(more)


Welcome Home Reception for Memphis Grizzlies Player Hasheem Thabeet

On August 17, 2009 Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Larry André hosted a welcome home reception for Hasheem Thabeet, the first Tanzanian to be drafted into America’s National Basketball Association (NBA). Addressing a crowd of more than two hundred Tanzanian government officials, sports, culture and media leaders, as well as members of the diplomatic corps (more).


American Art Delegation to Conduct Arts Workshops with Tanzanian Counterparts

The Great Lakes Consortium (GLC) of Toledo, Ohio conducted art workshops in Arusha and Zanzibar and leadership training in Tanga. The GLC events involved seven American artists from Ohio and more than 40 emerging Tanzanian female artists. The visit ran from July 6-30, 2009 (more)
