Mabibi na mabwana, habari za mchana! (Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon!)
It is my pleasure to join you here in Urambo. My colleagues have told me about how well they were treated by the friendly, hospitable people of this community. Today we celebrate the completion of this water project. We also celebrate the partnership between the people of the United States of America and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Our partnership has brought to this community greater access to safe water and to education.
Your community has long suffered from illnesses caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water. Water-borne diseases such as typhoid, diarrhea, and cholera have attacked the people of Urambo. Working together, we are now fighting back. With clean, safe water, the people of this community can achieve greater progress in reducing poverty. A convenient local source of water means that the girls of Urambo are freed from the chore of carrying water from remote sources to their homes to cook, clean and drink. Instead, they can use this time to attend school.
The funding for this project was provided by our Military’s Africa Command. The engineering and contracting support for this project came from the Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. Thank you to both of those great organizations--you represent the best of the American people and their generous spirit. I would also like to thank Tanzanian leaders for their continued support of this project: Tabora Regional Commissioner Mr. Abed Mwinyimusa , Urambo District Commissioner Hon. Majaliwa Kassim and Minister for Community Development Gender and Children Margaret Sitta, for taking the initiative to nominate this project over 2 years ago.
The American people contributed over 600 million Tanzanian shillings ($470,000 dollars) to this project. We Americans want to see our Tanzanian partners succeed in building strong, healthy and prosperous communities and a strong, healthy and prosperous nation. This contribution comes from hardworking American families who genuinely care about the Tanzanian people. They believe in your future, and they are willing to financially support these projects to help you create a better future.
On behalf of the American people, I congratulate you on your hard work contributing to the successful completion of this project.
