Equipment Handover for AIDS Prevention Projects in Zanzibar

Venue: Stone Town, Zanzibar

June 1, 2009

Remarks by Karen Grissette, Public Diplomacy Officer

First Lady Mama Shadya Karume, Representatives from the Ministry of Health, Non-Governmental Organizations, Community members, and members of the media, asalam aleykum.

It is an honor to be here today on behalf of the U.S. Embassy and the American people. The United States of America is a global leader in supporting prevention, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS worldwide. Support for the project we are celebrating today is provided by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. This 10-year, $48 billion program, is the largest initiative in history to combat a single disease.

Since its inception in 2003, the American people have provided over $817 million to combat HIV/AIDS throughout the United Republic of Tanzania, including on Zanzibar. In 2009, we expect to provide an additional $300 million to Tanzania to fight this deadly disease.

But the real heroes of this effort are the people of our two nations. The American people have committed this support for the people of Tanzania. The on-the-ground implementers are bringing this project to realization. Hongera sana.

Americans will continue to work closely with Tanzanians for a “Tanzania free of HIV.” Asanteni sana kwa ushirikiano wenu kwa watu wa Marekani. Hongera sana.
