Post Graduate Student Stipend – 2008

The Tanzania Studies Association announces a competition for up to two research stipends to be awarded to post-graduate students enrolled in any higher education institution in Tanzania. Students conducting research for a thesis or dissertation are eligible to apply. The competition is open to students conducting research in the humanities, social sciences or closely related fields on Tanzanian topics. Students must have received approval of their research proposals by their department or faculty. The award will consist of a one-time grant of the Tanzania shilling equivalent of US$500. The funds can be used to support any type of research activity.

Applicants will submit a brief (no more than 5 double-spaced pages) project description and budget. The project description will include: i) a brief discussion of related scholarship, ii) an explanation of why the project will produce important knowledge about Tanzania, and iii) a description of research activities supported by the award. It will also include a one-page budget with itemized use of funds, explaining how each budget item will contribute to the completion of the research. The cover sheet for the proposal should have complete contact information for the applicant. Applicants will include a letter of recommendation from their thesis or dissertation advisor. Letters of recommendation should address the following points:

1. How you know the applicant's work (e.g., as applicant's advisor, teacher, etc.)
2. the applicant's qualifications and academic preparation for the study, including relevant courses and/or prior research experience
3. the design and feasibility of the study
4. the contributions of the project to the applicant's major field of study
5. the candidate's promise as a researcher/scholar in his/her field

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2008. Applications will be considered by a committee appointed by the Tanzania Studies Association. The recipient of the stipend will be notified by 30 July 2008. The award will be made by 15 August 2008.
