Direct Access to the Muslim World
Help U.S. higher education institutions develop a richer understanding of Islamic peoples and civilizations

Purpose
- To help American colleges and universities enrich programs and courses on the Muslim world and civilization and to reach out to the surrounding communities.
- To give experts from those countries a chance to talk about their countries and cultures and to gain exposure in the U.S.
Activities
Lecturing; consulting on academic curricula and programs; relationship building with institutions; and public-outreach activities in schools, religious groups, and communities. The teaching of languages or undertaking a research project will not be supported.
Eligibility
- Scholars and professionals from disciplines of: area studies (Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia), arts, business and economics, communications and journalism, international relations, Islamic civilization/studies, law, literature, political science, religion, sociology and women’s studies.
- Track record of teaching, lecturing and/or consulting.
- Excellent command of English.
- Expertise on cultures/civilizations/societies of the predominantly Muslim countries. The applicant does not need to be Muslim by religion or a scholar on Islam

Application Details
Scholars from the eligible countries/locales who have an academic and/or professional background in the specified disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have an excellent command of English and be ready to participate in an intensive lecturing program.
Duration and Dates
Up to 30 grants of between three and six weeks in the 2007-08 academic year.
Financial Support
Grants include air travel, in-transit allowance and an honorarium for each participant, paid to the Visiting Specialist. Daily per diem will be adjusted according to the host university’s in-kind contributions. Accident and sickness insurance and round trip international flight tickets will be provided by CIES. Due to the short-term nature of this program, dependents are not allowed to accompany the Visiting Specialist to the United States.
